Today, the Government announced there will be no compensation for the WASPI women (Women Against State Pension Inequality), turning its back on millions of pension-age women who were wronged through no fault of their own. This decision is a disgrace and a day of shame for the Government.
These are women who worked hard, planned for their retirement, and then had the rug pulled from under them when the state pension age was raised without proper notice. The independent Ombudsman made clear recommendations for fair compensation, and yet this new Government has chosen to ignore them.
Let’s be clear: the Conservative Party left our economy in tatters. Now, ministers are asking wronged pensioners to pay the price for years of economic mismanagement. It’s shameful, it’s unfair, and it’s simply wrong.
For years, the Liberal Democrats have stood with the WASPI women, pushing the Government to fairly compensate those affected in line with the Ombudsman’s recommendations.
I fully support WASPI Women and their campaign for justice. Your voices must be heard, and I will be pressing ministers in Parliament to deliver the fair treatment you deserve.
