It was a real joy to attend the unveiling of the Paddington statue in Newbury today. After everything that’s happened in recent months, seeing him return to his bench felt like a moment of real celebration for our community.
Paddington has always meant a great deal to Newbury. As the creation of Michael Bond, he’s more than just a storybook character. He represents warmth, kindness, and the idea that everyone, no matter where they come from, deserves a welcoming place to call home. So when the statue was damaged earlier this year, it struck a chord with people of all ages.
But in true Newbury spirit, the town rallied.
Over the past few months, it’s been inspiring to see how many people came together to support Paddington’s return. Children wrote heartfelt letters welcoming him back. Residents young and old shared their memories and appreciation for what he means to our town. And today, that spirit was on full display. The unveiling was full of smiles, laughter and even some lovely ukulele music performed by a group of local children - the perfect soundtrack to the occasion!
It’s easy to underestimate how much small landmarks like this can mean. But Paddington is more than just a statue—he’s part of Newbury’s identity. He reminds us of the importance of compassion, of being there for each other, and of the value of belonging. In many ways, the journey to bring him back has reflected all of those things.
What happened to the statue was upsetting. But the way the town responded was uplifting. It showed the very best of Newbury—resilient, united, and full of heart. We didn’t let one negative act define us. Instead, we turned it into something positive, something that brought people together.
As families gathered for the unveiling and children ran up for their first photos with Paddington back in place, it was clear how loved he is. And how important it is to protect and celebrate what makes our town unique.
Paddington has always had a home in Newbury—and thanks to the amazing efforts of so many people, he always will.
