Lee Elected to Housing, Communities & Local Government Select Committee

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been elected to the Housing, Communities & Local Government (HCLG) Select Committee in Parliament! This is a significant milestone in my role as your MP for Newbury, and I’m eager to get to work on the pressing housing and community issues that impact us locally and nationally.

Housing has always been close to my heart. Growing up in social housing, I’ve seen first-hand how access to safe, affordable homes can transform lives. Professionally, I’ve spent 14 years in social housing, managing 10,000 homes and working on estate regenerations, social programmes, and employment initiatives. This experience has shown me how important it is to not only build more homes but also create communities where people can thrive.

The HCLG Committee has a vital role in holding the government to account on its housing and local government policies. With so many families facing the challenges of the housing crisis, the committee’s work is crucial in pushing for solutions that deliver affordable housing, support local councils, and ensure sustainable development.

For Newbury, this means advocating for the resources our councils need, tackling housing shortages, and ensuring that our community’s voice is heard. I also want to focus on ensuring that local government finance is fair, and that vulnerable communities are properly supported.

Housing isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about giving people a foundation for a better future. That’s why I’m so passionate about addressing the root causes of the housing crisis and ensuring government policy reflects the realities faced by families here in West Berkshire and across the UK.

This opportunity is a privilege, and I take it seriously. I’ll be using my time on the committee to scrutinise decisions, challenge policies where needed, and push for innovative solutions to some of the most urgent issues we face today.
